Stumbling in well past midnight, Steve trips over a pair of shoes in the hallway.  Rubbing his smoke stained face, he reaches for the lights.  Tubes of frosting are everywhere and the kitchen smells heavenly.  He can see TJ’s foot hanging over the end of the couch.  The cupcakes look AMAZING.  Either TJ finally got the hang of it, or he hired someone to help.  Reaching for a beer in the fridge, Steve shakes his head.  The kid takes short cuts sometimes, but he wouldn’t do that.  He seems determined to learn to decorate a damn cupcake.  

Hearing him stir on the couch, Steve grabs a water bottle as well, swiping one of the miniature cakes and crossing to the leather arm chair.  

“Oh, man.  Sorry about the mess.  I was hoping to clean up before you got back.”  TJ sits up, wiping the sleep from his eyes. “I must have crashed.  My oven never bakes them right, so I came down here…  I’m sorry; I’ll clean it in the morning.”

Steve hands him the waterbottle and falls into the soft leather seat.  “You made a million.  What’s the deal?”  He licks a spot of frosting from his thumb before peeling back the wrapper and biting into the treat.

“You know that girl downstairs?  The one with the cute dogs?  It’s her birthday,” looking at his watch, he says, “today.  I thought she’d like a nice surprise.”
